Japanese Customer Performs Uzbek Traditional Song

Mashu from Tokyo walked in to Bibi Hanum in Tashkent to pick herself a garment that would remind her of the two years that she had spent in Uzbekistan as a volunteer music teacher in one of Bukhara schools.  Mashu spent couple of hours browsing through many ikat dresses, skirts and jackets. It was overwhelming to choose a garment when there are so many options. She finally selected an embroidered ikat skirt and a jacket.A day before her departure time to Japan, she wanted to get the skirt altered to her size. The next day she came to Bibi Hanum to pick up her altered garments. She walked in with her Uzbek traditional music instrument ‘dutor’.

Everyone in Bibi Hanum was curious after learning that she could play the instrument. We asked her to perform a song. After her performance everyone was so amazed to see how perfect her Uzbek language was. She decided to perform another song. We asked her to wear an Uzbek garment while performing the second song. She fell in love with the coat and wanted to buy it  so she could wear it to all her future performances in Japan. Our assistant Jasur mentioned that the color of the coat was in the color of Sakura.

Mashu’s budget was limited and she thought she could not afford it. We at Bibi Hanum were so in love with Mashu’s talent and performance, so we decided that Mashu had to own the coat and let her have it with whatever the budget she had. We presented the coat to Mashu for her wonerful performance and thanked her for promoting Uzbek cultural heritage.
